Circus Arts

When Ryan told us a few months ago that his class at school was taking "Circus Arts", I have to admit the first thing I thought was "What kind of school are we sending him to?"   After seeing his Circus performance today, I am so glad he had the chance to take such a fun class.   The show was adorable, hilarious and Ryan was wonderful!!
Ryan did not tell us anything about the show- how the class prepared for it or what exactly his role was so you can imagine our surprise when we sat in my seat and looked across the row and saw the CUTEST clown we have ever seen!
Ryan never told us that he had a costume (he said his costume was that he needed to wear a solid shirt) or that he was wearing makeup (which he reminded me multiple times tonight was not makeup, but was actually face paint).
All four 1st grade classes participated in the Circus and there were 14 different acts -  ribbon twirlers, feather balancers, platter spinners, hula hoopers and robots to name a few.

Finally, halfway through the show, it was Ryan's groups turn: The Strongest Clown and the Roustabouts

In the Routabout skit, the circus workers (roustabouts) are being disruptive to the strongest woman who is practicing weightlifting.   She would ask them "What are you doing?" to which they answered "We are hammering", "we are dancing" "we are pulling rope" or "We are shoveling elephant poo" lol.   The strong woman would say "You can't do that here" and the boys would answer "We can't do that here? Soooorrrryy" before they would dance off to Gangnam Style to a different spot.

It was so obvious that the kids were really enjoying themselves and it was definitely a great role for Ryan - the sillier you were, the better!

Ryan - you were the cutest clown and we are all so proud of you.  Your dance moves were fantastic and we loved that you smiled and looked so happy the whole time. When we left, I asked Dylan what he thought of the circus and he said "That was wonderful - I think Ryan was 100 thumbs up!!"
Daddy and I couldn't agree more - Great job Ryan!!  If you get to do a circus show again in second grade, I promise we will all be in the first row cheering for you.

52 week project - Week 5 (really week 6) - Winter

from February 10, 2013
This past weekend showed that even though Punxsutanwey Phil predicted on Groundhog Day that Spring was coming, it definitely is still
Blizzard Nemo began on Friday and continued into Saturday bringing over a foot of snow to the city (and almost 2 feet of snow near grandma/papa's and  omi/poppy's house!).   When we got up in the morning, we got all of our snow gear on and headed outside to do some sledding, city style.
Since we moved just across the street from our old building, we headed over to our usually hill right behind the house.   As usual, plenty of Ryan's school friends were there and all of the Wyatt's came too.
As usual, because there is a road near the bottom of the hill, the parents took turns helping the kids up the hill with their tubes and catching them at the bottom of the hill before they went in to the road.  I have to say, Ryan was really helpful to Dylan in getting both tubes up the hill and he didn't complain at all.
Ryan also wanted to sled way more than Dylan did.  It did not take long before Dylan complained that he was cold/hungry/bored and sat down and proceeded to eat about 2 feet worth of snow.
After about an hour and a half outside, the kids begged Jay to have a snowball fight with them - the kids definitely need to work on their snowball making skills.

The next day we went up to Westchester to see Omi and Poppy and do a little more sledding.
While Jay and I were getting the kids ready in all of their snow gear (which takes FOREVER), we looked out the window and saw Omi and Poppy outside trying to make a smooth track for the kids to sled on.
We brought up one of our tubes from the city but the kids alternated between using the tube, a sled that Omi had and a boogie board that was in the barn lol. Once the track was pretty smooth, the kids were off down the hill.
The more they went down the hill, the faster they went and it was even more fun for the boys once Poppy added moguls!

While the boys were sledding, Jay started making a snowman and when Ryan saw, he decided to help out too. They did a great job!

While I don't like to wish the time away and actually don't mind the snow/cold that much, I am looking forward to spring and the weather getting a bit warmer.  For now though, I see more snow in my future!

52 week project 2013 - week 11: Green aka St. Patrick's Day post

once again, very far behind on the 52 week project ....oh well, at least this week was easy
week 11 - Green
Happy St. Patrick's Day
I love any excuse to celebrate, especially if it involves dressing up.   It should come as no surprise then that I had been looking forward to St. Patrick's Day for exactly 365 days - we had such a great time last year that I could not wait for it to come again this year.  Because St. Patrick's Day was on Sunday this year, the parade was on Saturday and accordingly, our leprechaun came a day early too.   The kids couldn't stop talking about whether or not he would come, so much so I am pretty sure Ryan was dreaming about it because he woke up at 5 am, came into my room and said "you have to follow me".   He was so excited so despite the ridiculous hour,  I followed him so he could show me the first prank.

Ryan also realized that there was a gold coin trail leading out of his bedroom but I told him that he had to go back to bed until at least 7 - he was loud enough that Dylan woke up and they asked me every 3 minutes for the next hour if it was 7 o'clock yet.  Finally, they went back to sleep but of course, somehow managed to wake up at exactly 7:01.  So out of bed we went to see what else the leprechaun did.

First, we found a table of treats - chocolates, beads, shamrock straws and green bagels. (in the fridge, we also found green milk!)  The kids each got a bucket and started collecting their coins and goodies:
After we had some breakfast, collected all of the coins and found some more things to wear to the parade, we headed uptown to meet the Potenza's and Omi.   Since we got to our meeting location first (same area as last year), we staked out our spot and put some of our gear on.

We were at the parade site pretty early and it was pretty cold out so we did our best to stay busy/stay warm by taking pictures, playing games, having snacks and playing on the iphone/itouch.
Finally, the parade was ready to begin!  After a parade of horses, we could hear the bagpipes coming and the kids were on their feet ready to go.
Like last year, the kids, especially Ryan and Katie, could not wait to give their coins out and yelled to all of the parade participants "come over here, we have gold coins for good luck"  Some of the police officers said they could not accept gifts, but lots of people did come over and took the coins. Some made trades: a coin for a flag or beads and others told the kids that it was their favorite part of the parade.   I know that giving out the coins is definitely the kids favorite part.
About 20 minutes in to the parade, it started lightly snowing and about 45 minutes later, it was really snowing.   What a difference from last year!  When we saw the kids laying inside of the duvet, we figured that they all had enough.
We packed everything up, took a few more pictures and went over to the Potenza's for a few hours to keep the fun going.   Even though the weather was not all that we had hoped, we had a fantastic, fun day!

ryan was so funny in both, i had to include both because i really couldn't pick between the two lol
Today, the fun continued - Jay and I took the kids to the movies and then we went out to lunch.  My handsome lunch date picked out his own outfit - is he handsome or what??
Happy St. Patrick's Day!!
